Transcription and conventions used

The transcription consists of 3120 name entries from memorial inscriptions in the Earley Town Council Cemetery at Mays Lane, in Earley, Berkshire between the first burial in 1936 and 1993. Photographs have now been taken of about 400 gravestones (including all of Section F, and the transcribed part of section L) and more will be added as time allows.

The index includes the following fields:-

  • Section/Row/Number - the cemetery is divided into sections, and each section has a grid layout. In some sections, the plots are simply numbered while in others the sections have rows (or columns) numbered as well.

  • Image ref - with each section, any image is identified by a name i constructed from the row and number. A link, including a charge, will be provided if an image is available.
  • Forenames
  • Surname - in CAPITALS
  • Date of death - as dd/mm/yyyy - 00 is used to indicate that no day or month is given, while ?? indicates that the day or month is unreadable.
  • Age at death - if present and in years, unless otherwise indicated.
  • Date of birth - as dd/mm/yyyy if present, with the same convention as the death date.
  • Inscription - anything in [square brackets] is not part of the inscription and either describes the memorial, comments on the inscription or gives information from the grave register. A single / indicates the end of a line, while a double // indicates moving to another stone or part of the stone.

In a few cases the photograph may provide a further or alternative transcription if a further interrment has occured or the stone has been replaced.
